The Stripped Thread Disaster
A beginner maintenance classic?
DIY Work
- Oil change
- Left crankcase gasket replacement
- Seat cowl and main seat replacement, seat band transplant
- Headlight rim replacement
There had been oil seepage from the crankcase since I bought the bike, so I knew the gasket needed to be replaced.
I successfully cleaned up the mating surfaces and put in the new gasket, but when I went to reassemble, I put a bolt in the wrong hole and stripped the threads.
The crankcase bolts come in two lengths, and I hadn’t kept track of which hole took which bolt.
This ended up costing me quite a bit to repair.
I suppose I should be grateful it was even fixable. (Worst case, there was a risk of cracking the case.)
