  • Front fork overhaul

The front forks had noticeable oil seepage since I bought the bike, and I really wanted to fix it.
I got a re-chroming estimate from Nirin-kan, but the price was shocking and the lead time was indefinite, so I decided to tackle it myself.
The inner tubes were discontinued, but luckily I was able to source OEM replacements.
This was definitely not something a beginner could just jump into bare-handed, so I bought the proper special service tools (SST). (They were expensive, but no choice there.)
At first I didn’t even have a motorcycle jack, so I supported the bottom with blocks and hung it from above with a rope.

After disassembly.
The inner tubes looked clean at first glance, but there were several rust pits, which were likely causing the oil seepage.
Most of the internal fork parts are discontinued, so it would be a real problem if anything broke.

Work in progress

I made an assembly mistake the first time around, but disassembled it again, added the fork oil, and completed the reassembly.
I wanted to set the fork oil level using the oil level method, but I didn’t have the equipment to hold them perfectly vertical or a level gauge tool, so I just eyeballed it.
Next time I change the oil, I’d like to measure it properly.
