Carburetor Overhaul
Fixing the engine running issues
DIY Work
- Carburetor overhaul
- Throttle cable replacement
- Grip area parts replacement
- Fuel cap replacement
This Renaissa runs okay in general, but it had poor starting and would sometimes stall on the road in the middle of summer — lots of things to worry about.
Naturally, the first suspect is the carburetor.
Condition
Removed the carburetor and inspected it.
Somehow the main jet was corroded.
It didn’t seem clogged, but I replaced everything with new parts.
Now, the real problem was the needle.
It had a different jet needle number than the stock spec, so I wanted to swap it back to the original, but the OEM part is discontinued!
I had no choice but to transplant the needle from a spare carburetor I had bought separately as a backup.
Reassembly
The body itself was in relatively good shape, and no parts were seized, so the reassembly went smoother than expected.
Installation
The one big mistake I made was not doing a final float level check with the carburetor off the bike.
Once it’s mounted on the vehicle, it’s hard to get it level, and adjustments are difficult due to the tight space.
Result
I performed a sync adjustment using vacuum gauges, and tuned the idle speed with an RPM meter, completing the job.
However, I didn’t really figure out the pilot screw adjustment, so that’s something for next time.
For now, I set it to the position specified in the service manual.
